A VFN-Related Church is an intimate gathering of about five to twenty members. Here they come together as God’s family to worship, pray, study the Bible, and minister to one another. Unlike in many large churches, where they meet in many different diverse building types, where small groups are only a supplement to the main service in a building, each church itself is a full expression of the church. Believers share life together—welcoming new family through baptism, remembering Christ in communion, caring for one another’s needs, enjoying meals and fellowship, and reaching out with the gospel. Smaller Churches are the very setting in which the New Testament was written. The first believers met in homes—first all together in one house (Acts 2:1–2), and then in many houses (Acts 2:46). Church buildings as we know them didn’t become common until centuries later. This doesn’t make such buildings “wrong,” but it does remind us that small gatherings as churches are both biblical and effective today.
